News:The Spring Steelhead Season
4/1/2010
The spring Steelhead season in upstate New York is in full swing. Each year as the snow melts and the rivers rise, the Steelhead migrate into the rivers to spawn. The Steelhead can be found in the smallest of streams to the largest of rivers. If you like to swing flies, large and gaudy, to provoke violent strikes, this is the time of year to put your line in the water. The key to fishing this time of year is to keep moving within a given area. A common mis-take is stay in one place and make the same cast over and over. Cover the water, showing the fly to the entire area. It is extremely important to let your fly swing to the very end of the drift. After the line straightens out, retrieve the fly with a couple of short quick pulls, this just might result in a hit. The Steelhead have a tendency to follow the fly to the end of the swing and take the fly on the dangle or the quick start of the retrieve.
I realize there are many fishing opportunities this time of year, but you would be remiss if you did not give the spring Steelhead fishing a try. This fishing has a lot to offer, warm weather, active fish and not a lot of fisherman.
I will be on the Salmon River from the April 14th through the 28th teaching spey casting and guiding. I am offering two spey classes this spring in Pulaski, New York: April 17th (class is full) and 18th (class has one opening). The cost of the class is $125 per student.
I have uploaded a few instructional videos to YouTube demonstrating several of the different spey casts taught during my classes.
